Where is Africa?

My first question to the group is: Where is Africa? Please post your thoughts about its location, what you think of Mo's adventure, what you will miss most about her, if you think Dingoes dwell there, if Mo will ride one, and last but not least, what Africa means to YOU. Don't be mushy. Expletives are both appreciated and encouraged.

  1. Africa, specifically South Africa (where Mo will be summering) is a continent of considerable land mass in the southern hemisphere located directly below Mexico. I have only had the pleasure of visiting Africa twice and both of those times were on cruises during college spring break. It was not until the second cruise that we actually got to stop at the port in Rwanda. We had spent the night before drinking at the Carlos n' Charlie’s in Cozumel and unfortunately I got a disastrous case of Montezuma's Revenge from the non-purified ice in the +/- 17 L.I.T.s that I imbibed. I had the squirts from both ends and was needless to say, completely and utterly incapacitated when we docked in Rwanda. I never got off of the boat but my friends all said it was amazing. They purchased a mariachi band on the beach and said they ate some of the best queso dip on that side of the equator.

I am so excited for you to experience all the beauty of the Caribbean and take in the Latin culture. Have a blast!!!

  2. From Pat-

Ah I remember my time in Africa... I, a Danish baroness slash plantation owner... he a free spirited big game hunter with sandy hair and piercing blue eyes.. our love affair was doomed from the beginning.. but I had a giant white bat to find.. despite my fear of bats and their custom of spitting in my face to say hello... but I had to leave to find my queen.. I would miss Zamunda but I one day would return.. once I had finished my time playing college basketball for Coach Jimmy Dolan.. although I'd already learned his signature move to save my people's land.. land exploited to get the beautiful stones buried there.. I needed his help to escape to freedome with my son.. but his accent was terrible... don't even get me started on the main catchphrase.. but it was the only way to keep the maneating lion away.. that's the way he kills lions.. ice cold no mistakes.. until he and the rest of his Seal team pulled me out.. I couldn't leave my patients though... not in the middle of an ethnic genocyde.. but he had never Lived Easily.. luckily our helicopter didn't crash.. like the last time.. when it went the opposite of up..thank goodness for the Rangers.. stupid Clinton.. he tricked me... he tricked me into believing I'd killed my father.. but it just wasn't true.. he was as evil as his face and origin-obvious name implied.. a king among jackles but not a king among the clouds... it was a rhombus of existence... or something like that.

Africa, how I miss you. Where is Africa? In your soul, friend... in your soul.

  3. Africa is where Mo gets all her jewelry from of course. So I imagine Africa is one large Urban Outfitters somewhere underneath India filled with every kind of tree and plant imaginable to fashion only the prettiest of wooden wares. Naturally, I’m sure Africa sells swanky head scarves for $40 and vuvuzelas to accompany these fashion pieces.

Other African fun facts- I think Mr. Kelly made us read a book about Africa in high school. I did not have the appropriate time or will to read said book. I rented the movie though. I think it had James Earl Jones in it so maybe you should check it out. I’m sure they have VCRs there. Or maybe just rent ‘Lion King’ that has James Earl Jones and Africa in it, too.

I hope you have a safe trip to the nether lands of Africa, and please bring me back a vuvuzela or one of Madonna’s rejected adoption choices (preference: boy)! LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. From Amy F.-

I had a friend in college that had this notion that Africa was being misrepresented in size on every modern day map in the world. He swore it was a conspiracy to belittle and undermine the continents’ impact and importance. He proceeded to order an incorrect alternate map online and posted it in the student center as a justice statement. Poor students just became so confused. Poor me, I also became confused. I thought Africa was the size of Australia… or Texas. I thought that these ‘lack of water issues’ were quite exaggerated, because come on people, haven’t you heard of sprinklers? Your desert ain’t THAT big. At least that’s what my social studies teacher taught me. Did I mention my social studies teacher was a tiny bit racist? No? Well, that’s another story.

Mo, I charge you with one task whilst abroad--- measure Africa. I’m plain sick and tired of not knowing its true girth. Calculations will be in miles, because kilometers are for turds. And if you come back to DC measuring things in liters, I will de-friend you on Facebook. Love ya!

  5. Africa is a space battleship ("Battleship Africa") constructed by the Twelve Colonies of Man. The Africa represents the Colonial planet of Gondor, and is crewed mostly by Gondorans. The Africa was launched more than 500 yahren before the close of the Thousand Yahren War with the Cylons. The Africa is capable of light-speed travel and has a complement of about 150 Viper fighter spacecrafts.

Mo's humanitarian mission is actually a cover for a top secret military operation aboard The Africa. Despite her small exterior, what we don't know about Mo (Call sign: "Modusa") is that she is a very capable, yet hot-headed cocky fighter pilot. As a result, the Commander of The Africa has ordered her to carry out a dangerous mission: commandeer a Cylon Raider and return to Gondor and retrieve the Sword of Isildur, a religious artifact supposedly pointing the way to Middle-Earth.

Even though Modusa will undoubtedly encounter orks, goblins, trolls and The Nazgûl (or Ringwraiths), her largest test will be against the Cylons: robotic beings that resemble and even mimic the behavior of humans, who are hell-bent on destroying humanity.

The crew of The Africa and the Twelve Colonies have full faith that Modusa will succeed in her mission.

You carry the fate of us all, little one.

    Godspeed.

  6. I guess I am going to be the only one to take this seriously.

    So, what is Africa?

I don't know to be honest. But, I have been to Africa. Once.

I remember crying for the first 3, maybe 4 days I was there. Praying I could just come home. But really, don't let me get you down.

Don't let the rebels and machetes intimidate you either. Cause they can be intimidating. Sweethearts once you win them over. At least thats what I hear.

If you ever miss America use these instructions to remind yourself of home:

    1. Go to YouTube.
    2. Type in search bar "John Benson has a van", or "UYD".
    3. Laugh as hard as you can.

Kathryn sends her love your way, and I have been instructed to say, "Ink when you get back."

  9. I don't know where Africa is, I barely know how to get to my office without getting lost, but I am pretty sure South Africa, and those who dwell there with hot accents, is not part of the real 'africa'. The 'real' africa being the part on the globe that looks like a skull. You know? Anyway, if you come back with an accent that'd be cool. Enjoy yourself in the Windy City, Mo!! We're so proud. I expressed my thoughts and feelings below in the only way one can address her best friend of 23 years: a 3 verse haiku. Namaste and hakuna matata, mi amigo.

    Off to Africa
Goodbye Mo, we'll miss your gas
    The bugs are big there

    Come back soon, but
Fill your papous with black kids
    Jean Needs a playmate

    Please shower, please shave
    While you are away
Do not forget the D stick

    Love, el General

  11. dont know much about it but I think there is a really nice hotel there named after the country. I heard about it somewhere. I think it was featured in a movie or something. I heard famous people have been there namely Don Cheadle. I wonder if you'll see him! I also heard Prince Harry's on and off girlfriend is from South Africa. Make sure you take your camera! TMZ would pay a pretty penny for some of that action.

Good luck mo! Be safe, learn lots and please share your stories!!!

    xo
